What Is GEO, and How Is It Different From SEO?

The short answer

GEO, or generative engine optimization, describes work intended to make information easier to discover and use in AI-generated answers. SEO focuses on visibility in search. Much of the underlying work overlaps: clear, accessible, credible content that answers a need.

Begin with the shared foundation

Describe your services accurately. Give each important topic a clear home. Use descriptive headings, direct answers, relevant internal links, and evidence people can inspect. A page should help a reader understand the subject even if they never arrive through an AI tool.

Treat AI answers as another discovery surface

An AI answer can summarize multiple sources and may change across tools, questions, and dates. That makes a single screenshot a limited observation. Record how you tested, what appeared, and what you cannot conclude from that result.

Avoid a separate content factory

Creating a second set of pages solely for AI can dilute the information buyers need. Improve the knowledge on the site first. Structured data should describe visible, accurate content. There isn’t a special schema type that guarantees inclusion in generative search.

A question to take back to your team

What would a prospective client understand about this today, using only the information your firm has made public?

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Clear content and sound search fundamentals remain relevant. Review visibility across the channels your buyers use, without assuming that one channel replaces the others.
